DSE 2022 Opening Keynote with Refik Anadol: Space in the Mind of a Machine
Feedback form is now closed.
If machines can “learn” or “process” individual and collective memories, can they also dream or hallucinate about them? Since 2016, Refik Anadol Studio has been conducting interdisciplinary research on the relation between the human mind, architecture, and aesthetics to speculate responses to these questions. In taking the data that flows around us as his primary material and the neural network of a computerized mind as his collaborator, Anadol has been reflecting on new forms of narrating collective memory in physical and virtual spaces, including the blockchain. Coining the terms “AI Data Painting,” “AI Data Sculpture,” and “latent cinema,” Refik Anadol has invited his audience to imagine alternative and dynamic realities by re-defining the functionalities of both interior and exterior architectural elements. He tackles this by moving beyond the integration of media into built forms and translating the logic of a new media technology into spatial design. In this talk he'll share his studio's site-specific parametric data sculptures, live audio/visual performances, immersive installations, and NFTs, which collectively offer a dramatic rethinking of our many environments.
